Latinos say “Hasta la vista Arizona” - economic impact looks severe, SB 1070 killer for Republicans

Documented and
undocumented
immigrants
flee

After Colorado got nasty with undocumented immigrants, many documented immigrants refused to come to the Rocky Mountains.  That put a crunch on San Luis Valley farmers who could not find enough labor to get their crops out of the ground, a little known fact the Colorado congress does not want you to know.
Colorado decided it would not allow any public services to undocumented people which was interpreted by narrow minds to mean no auto registrations, or public health.  They even required business renewals to certify the owners were documented,  forcing business to sell out.  Some may not have noticed, but Colorado is not in an economic boom.

Arizona has taken the cake regarding anti-immigrant legislations with SB 1070.  The law requires police to detain all persons suspected of being undocumented.  While protests against the law have centered around the racial profiling aspect, the people most affected by the law are undocumented immigrants.

americans are wetbacks too

It is sad to say, anti-immigrant forces are saying “Hasta La Vista”.  In fact in the first phrase of an article in the New York Daily News author Meena Hartenstein starts her article with the words “Hasta la vista”!  Perhaps it is just a slip, but Hartenstein’s statement is at best uncomplimentary.
Fox News headlines say there is no data to show the mass exodus, as the conservative newspaper attempts to shed doubt on the effect of SB 1070.  Later in the article they admit Latino children have been pulled out of school.

When I was in Arizona for the event “Alto Arizona” the National Day of Action, in which 100,000 people marched in protest of SB 1070, the news was clear:  Yes, there is a mass fleeing of Latinos from Arizona!  Most are undocumented immigrants, but some are citizens fed up with hate filled laws.
No matter how you cut it, undocumented immigrant or Latino citizen, one thing is sure:  Arizona is going to pay a huge economic price for a law which is considered by human rights activists as discriminatory and subject to abuse.

Activist are not the only ones protesting.  Municipalities like Las Angeles, companies and private citizens are saying “Hasta la vista, Arizona!” by cancelling visits.  As early as May 4th, 2010, owner of the Clarendon Hotel in Phoenix, Ben Bethel said customers canceled 80 room reservations in just one day
Arizona Republicans, most of whom are business owners, also failed to take into account how much money undocumented immigrants contribute to the economy.  They buy tv’s and air-conditioners like others.  One hopes Republican property owners are ready for tax hikes, as the state will be short on the tax base by the end of the year.

Once again the call for comprehensive immigration reform is being heard in the U.S. Senate.  The idea is to provide a fair resolution to the immigration problem, stop ugly laws like SB 1070 and rescue foolish Republicans from themselves.  Based upon the disaster forming in Arizona, no time is like the present for this badly needed reform.

A message to tourists and conventions destined for Arizona; come to God’s country! Don’t support devil worship!

Well, maybe the title is a bit extreme.  I am not sure what compelled Arizona to pas HB 1070 which was bound to be abused by law enforcement and earn the wrath of free America.  Maybe it falls within traditional concepts of God and the Devil.  Maybe not.  One thing is sure, it is turning Arizona into the gates of hell!

San Juan Mountains near Telluride, Colorado

Why take a trip to hell when you can come to God’s country?  Colorado is a spectacular state with four seasons of pure fun!  Winter, summer, spring and fall, all you have to do is call and we will be here!

Come ski at Beaver Creek, fish in Rocky Mountain National Park, hunt the Flat Tops – may the peace of the wilderness be with you, hike the San Juans, back pack, bird-watch, dance, ride horses, four wheel drive, visit lost ghost towns like Tin Cup, pan for gold, gamble in Blackhawk or come to an amusement park, we have it all!  We are also not in a war zone.   Better yet, Arizona can’t cut off the Colorado power grid for asking for your tourist dollars, unlike the threat they made to LA for the boycott that was announced against Arizona HB 1070!

With summer coming there are a lot of things to do.  Glenwood Springs has a wonderful hot springs pool that can accommodate half of the NFL!  From there, you could travel to posh Aspen, Colorado, or head on in to Denver for a night of dancing!  If you like to fish we have an active fish breeding program which jams our high mountain rivers and lakes with trout.  If you enjoy music try Breckenridge for the summer music series or look for one of the jazz or blue grass festivals.  Heck, there is so much to do it is hard to know where to start!

The long and short of it is, why vacation in a war zone?  Come to Colorado and avoid all of the insanity going on in Arizona.  We are not in the midst of a civil war!  We have not passed hate laws like HB 1070!  Some people consider this God’s country!

 Short story:

Protest HB 1070!

Order your free Arizona vacation guide at the state of Arizona's expense!  If we order enough of these the state will not have enough guides for their busy tourism season or will have to spend big bucks printing more!

This tactic worked well against a famous right wing Republican.  We shut down his toll free donation line by jamming it with protest calls and requests for free information!

There is more than one way to boycott Arizona!  Let them pay for the boycott out of their pockets!   This guide is absolutely free!

Be sure to order the print version as the computer version will do the movement no good.

Pass this along to 10 of your friends or send it over the social net!  Let's hit 'em in the wallet!

Long story

Arizona’s law HB 1070 which advocates open profiling of any person “of color” has passed and is in full preparations for launch.  Arizona Republican Governor Jan Brewer signed the bill into law.  Sheriff “Little Joe” Arpaio is ready with his 900 soldier strong squadron to swoop down and cleanse the land of everyone who “looks illegal”.

Help us protest this law where it hurts the most, in the back sides of Republicans who supported this ugly hate law.  When we speak about Republicans’ back side we are usually talking about their wallets!

Order your free Arizona tourist guide IN PRINT FORM!  Let the state that handed us an ugly law pay for a free tourist guide, including printing and mailing!  When you get it, throw it in the trash, put next to the toilet in the bathroom for emergencies or give it to dog kennel for crate paper.

Whatever you do, order the literature and let the great state pay.

This won’t cost you a dime!  Let Arizona know we vote with our pocketbooks!

Protest HB 1070, boycott Arizona, PASS THIS ON TO TEN OF YOUR FRIENDS AND ASK THEM TO ORDER THE FREE GUIDES, TOO!

National boycott planned for Arizona – speak with your dollars!

Just say NO to Arizona
Boycott HB 1070

It did not take an effort on the part of the National Council of La Raza to call for a boycott of Arizona for the first protests with the buck to start.  However, the influential organization, along with labor groups and others, has been instrumental in letting the citizens know there is a price to discrimination.

"No conferences. No travel," said Janet Murguía, president of the NCLR, the nation's largest Hispanic civil rights group. "We are looking at major events with big visibility, and we're asking all people to consider whether any purchase of goods from the state would further this unjust law."

In addition to the boycotts urged by the NCLR, there may be a national walkout throughout the United States in the planning.  We will keep you posted on news.

Not everyone in Arizona is in agreement with HB 1070 which requires law enforcement to investigate any suspected undocumented person to see if they are in the country “without papers”.  The law was vetoed when it came up for signature by the prior governor of Arizona who was a Democrat.  It took a Republican Governor, Jan Brewer, to sign the hate based legislation.

The problem with the law, amongst other issues, is it does not define what an “illegal alien” looks like.  That leaves some police departments in the un-happy position, and other police departments Like “Little Joe” Arpaio’s in the happy position, of determining for themselves what an undocumented resident looks like.  Since most undocumented workers are Latino, it mandates racial profiling and the obliteration of probable cause for Hispanics during police investigation.

Even though plenty of innocent persons will be hurt by a boycott, it sends a message to Arizona.  There is a price to hating your brother.  The National Council of La Raza NCLR is looking for large events to send the message.  According to an article in the Washington Post.

“Supporters of the NCLR have agreed to pull the Puerto Rican Day festival's regional meeting out of Phoenix, and the National Urban League struck the city from a short-list of places to host its 2012 conference.”

Murguía has requested Major League Baseball cancel the 2011 All-Star Game in Phoenix.  'She is joined by U.S. Sen. Robert Menendez (D-NJ), according to the Hudson Reporter.

However, every single one of us can help send the message.  Every unspent dollar counts.  No travel.  No purchasing of products made in Arizona.  No conferences.  Perhaps you can even take the scenic route if your travel plans would normally lead you through Arizona on your way to greener pastures.  Best, no financial support of any kind!

The move will likely strike terror in the hearts of Republicans who supported the hate law.  The Republican Party is the party which supports business interests over that of labor and minorities.  It is also critical we remember which party passed this ugly law in the up-coming elections!

We must also be vigilant against illegal violations of one’s civil rights.  The federal government has an information page for those who think their rights have been violated.   While Arizona sanctions State mandated civil rights violations, clear acts of hate may be prosecuted by the federal government.
