Reform Immigration For America, (RIFA), is one of the leading pro-immigration reform organizations in the U.S. today. The organization is “a united national effort that brings together individuals and grassroots organizations with the mission to build support for workable comprehensive immigration reform.”
The Campaign to Reform Immigration for America ( RIFA ) is, in part, a project of the Tides Advocacy Fund. There are 13 founding member organizations backed by over 600 immigrants rights and civil rights organizations. The original 13 are:
- AFL-CIO
- America’s Voice
- Asian American Justice Center (*)
- Center for American Progress
- Center for Community Change (*)
- Coalition for Humane Immigrant Rights of Los Angeles (*)
- Leadership Conference for Civil Rights
- National Council of La Raza (*)
- National Immigration Forum (*)
- Pineros y Campesinos Unidos del Noroeste (farm workers)
- Service Employees International Union (*)
- United Food and Commercial Workers
- U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops
The issue of gay rights within immigration reform is hotly contested. Gay spouses want to help their immigrant partners naturalize just as straight couples do. The RIFA groups above who support gay rights have stars by them.
Bringing about immigration reform is no easy task. Conservative forces wish to close the border before discussing changes to immigration law. Once they have what they want, a stranglehold on border crossings, the conservatives have little incentive to come to the bargaining table for immigration reform.
Arizona with it’s racial profiling law HB 1070 and the law attacking immigrant children in schools SB 1097 is a prime example of the conservative vision for America. HB 1070 passed strictly along party lines, Republicans for, all Democrats against.
Many people believe the immigration reform movement belongs to immigrants because they “are the one’s most closely affected”. The reality is, every single American is closely affected by unjust immigration laws and policies.
Whenever a society supports a third class of people every person is affected. The concept of equality and justice for all which this country was founded upon is at risk. All of us must support rational immigration reform!
Comprehensive Immigration Reform (CIR) is the closest to immigration reform we have been able to get. This is a call to all fair minded Americans to support CIR.
RIFA has mobilized grass roots support. If you are willing to help this wonderful cause you can do so by hitting the button below.
